A fine Dutch late Regency or early Biedermeier period tea caddy, circa 1830, veneered in richly mottled tortoiseshell with deep amber, chestnut, and dark brown figuring. The compact rectangular body is raised on small bun feet and fitted with pale white tone trim, including the fine stringing that outlines the lid seam and accentuates the architectural profile of the box. The domed lid is surmounted by a raised rectangular panel, giving the caddy a more formal casket-like silhouette, while the front is centered by a shaped silver escutcheon.
The interior opens to reveal its fitted compartment with a hinged lid, aged lining, and accompanying key, preserving the intimate function of the piece as a refined tea table object. The use of materials reflects the luxury cabinetmaking traditions of the early 19th century, when small domestic objects were treated with the same attention to exotic materials and precision mounts as larger pieces of furniture. Dutch examples of this period often combine restrained form with highly decorative surface materials, and this caddy’s glossy shell veneer, pale mounts, compact scale, and domed form give it strong decorative presence.
