Asian “Three Wise Monkeys” in Carved Wood

These three hand-carved figures depict the globally recognized Three Wise Monkeys, an ancient cultural motif that symbolizes the principle of shielding oneself from bad thoughts, actions, or speech. While popular worldwide, this visual pun originated in 17th-century Japan. The monkey figures embody a classic trio of actions: Mizaru, left, covering the eyes to “see no evil.” Kikazaru, middle, covering the ears to “hear no evil.” And Iwazaru, right, covering the mouth to “speak no evil.”
The phrase zaru is an archaic Japanese negative verb suffix that sounds identical to saru, the Japanese word for monkey. The most famous early rendering is a sacred relief carving over the door of the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan.
The concept is deeply tied to Tendai Buddhism and Confucianism, suggesting that avoiding the witnessing or spreading of negativity keeps the mind pure and preserves good fortune.
The figures display prominent, visible chisel marks and grooved textures characteristic of traditional folk art carving. The wood features a two-tone appearance, achieved by applying a dark stain or torch-charring the recessed grooves (like the fur texture), while the raised facial features, hands, and feet are polished to highlight the warmer, reddish-brown wood grain underneath.
The unpainted underside image shows flat, raw wood grain with natural cracks, checking, and color variations. The irregular saw marks confirm these were independently carved by hand from separate blocks of solid wood, rather than mass-produced via synthetic molding.
Sets measuring 8 inches tall are ideal for bookshelves, desks, or mantels. Because of the universal appeal of the message, these kinds of hand-carved trios were highly popular souvenirs and home decor items produced throughout East and Southeast Asia during the mid-to-late 20th century.
