We present to you an original Arts and Crafts period hand-hammered copper “Canoe” flower basket attributed to the renowned metalsmith Dirk van Erp. Often referred to as a “canoe basket” or “flower boat,” this iconic design features an elongated vessel with upswept ends and a sturdy, central strap handle fastened with prominent rivets. Crafted in San Francisco, California, likely between 1915 and 1920. Unsigned.
Dirk Koperlager van Erp (1862–1933) was a Dutch American artisan, coppersmith and metalsmith, best known for lamps made of copper with mica shades, and also for copper vases, bowls and candlesticks. He was a prominent participant in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and was active in Oakland and San Francisco, California.
